Welcome to Grand Oaks Pet Hospital. We will have you fill out a new client form, a waiver acknowledging that you are aware of how this process works, (if you have not done online already) and meet our doctor. Our doctor will review the medical records provided by OCAS, draw blood to check for Microfilaria, and prescribe Doxycycline. You must provide us with your OCAS adoption paperwork, Heartworm Waiver, 

Anyone not in compliance during this entire process must be reported to OCAS. 

Our staff is dedicated to providing the best care for your pet. We will most likely grab a few pictures while we are showering your dog with love and care! (As long as you are OK with your new baby being a model!)

The only medication OCAS Heartworm Treatment covers is Doxycycline for thirty days.

At your first visit, you will be required to purchase Heartworm Prevention. 

The medication cost is determined based on weight. 

Your pet needs to receive heartworm prevention for its entire life. 

A dog can be reinfected without it. 

A fecal test will be sent out at your expense. Please bring a fresh sample with you.  

If your pet has worms, you will need to come back to purchase medicine.

We recommend purchasing Flea Preventive as well. Fleas can cause tapeworms. 

If your dog has any other conditions, you are responsible for those costs. 

Book your pet's appointment for two months from your consultation. If for any reason, you switch doctors or return the dog, send us an email to Help@GrandOaksPetHospital.com so we can remove you from our list. 

Anyone not in compliance during this entire process must be reported to OCAS. 

This appointment is to be scheduled two months after your consultation. You will drop your pet off with us at apx 9AM. Your dog will stay with us for the day as it is important for us to monitor the dog after the injection. Your dog will receive a heartworm test, bloodwork, X-rays, urine test, and exam. The dog will receive a Diphenhydramine and Dexamethasone injection. We will call to confirm the time for pick up after a couple of hours have past after injection. We will shave part of your pet's back and give a dose of Prednisone. You will be informed of what time the next dose should be given at home. You must continue Prednisone for two months to prevent anaphylaxis as the heartworms die off.

You must restrict the dog's activity to avoid sudden death for the next three months. Short leashed walks only, no running or rough housing allowed. We can prescribe sedation medication if you feel it will be needed.

Required - Prednisone for a 2 months supply based on weight.

Optional - Trazodone 

Possibly - If the bloodwork, X-ray, or urine find anything not related to the heartworms, treatment cost is solely your responsibility.

Book your pet's appointment for one month from your first injection. If for any reason, you switch doctors or return the dog, send us an email to Help@GrandOaksPetHospital.com so we can remove you from our list. 

Anyone not in compliance during this entire process must be reported to OCAS. 

If your pet is lethargic, has decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, or shows difficulty breathing. If we are not open and the dog is not breathing properly, contact an emergency hospital closest to you. Please make sure you have signed up for our pet portal to have access to your records if needed. 

Please be aware your dog must return to us within 24 hours for another injection. 

If it is easier, you can board the dog with us. Check at the front desk to find current pricing.

We will monitor your pet throughout the day and you should be able to pick up at 6PM. Your dog will be walked, given water, receive comfortable bedding, and showered with love.

If your pet is lethargic, has decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, or shows difficulty breathing. If we are not open and the dog is not breathing properly, contact an emergency hospital closest to you. Please make sure you have signed up for our pet portal to have access to your records if needed.

If you do not board your dog with us, you must bring the pet back at 9AM the next day.
