Have your questions ready

We Know Vet Visits Can Be Overwhelming - We're Here to Help!

It’s completely normal to walk out of an appointment and realize you forgot to ask something. We hear it all the time! We encourage you to write your questions down ahead of time and bring them with you. Ask away! We’re here to listen and support you.  Your new client appointment is a full 30 minutes, giving us the time to really get to know you and your pet, unlike the quick 15-minute visits at many corporate clinics.  No question is a stupid question. Seriously. Whether it’s about food, behavior, medication, or just general curiosity, we want you to feel confident and informed.  If something slips your mind? No worries at all!

You’re always welcome to call us afterward — we’re happy to help.

Appointment Timing & Courtesy Policy

If you suspect your pet is contagious, please call us from the parking lot. We will let you know when your room is ready to avoid prolonged contact with others to keep everyone safe. We do our best to run on time. Your time is valuable, and we respect that, however, please understand that delays can happen, especially if we’re assisting an emergency walk-in or a client with a few extra questions.

To help keep things running smoothly, we kindly ask that you:

  • Arrive 5 minutes early if you need to fill out any paperwork.
  • Let us know if you're running behind.
  • Please note: If you are more than 15 minutes late, we may need to reschedule your appointment to avoid impacting other clients.

We appreciate your patience and understanding. We are always committed to giving you and your pet the time and attention you deserve.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.

For Everyone’s Safety: Pet Handling Guidelines

Even if your cat is usually calm in your arms, you never know when they might get spooked — especially by an excited dog in the lobby. All cats must arrive in a secure carrier. Don’t have one? No problem — we have sturdy cardboard carriers available for purchase.

For dogs, please make sure they are on a short, non-retractable leash at all times while on the premises.

If your dog has a history of fear-based reactivity or aggression, a muzzle is a responsible choice and helps keep everyone safe, including your pet.

Thank you for helping us create a safe and stress-free environment for all pets and their people!

you are in - now what?

Checking In With Your Pet

When you arrive, please check in at the front desk. If you’re bringing a dog, we’ll let you know when the scale is ready — please wait until we say it's okay before stepping on.

We know many dogs come in full of excitement (and we love that energy!), but it can make it tricky to get an accurate weight. Bringing a treat from home is a great way to get their attention and help them stay still just long enough for us to get a proper reading.

We will take your pet or bring you to a room as soon as possible.

Thanks for your help in making check-in smooth and stress-free for everyone!

No matter what life throws at you... At the end of the day, your pets still love you!

Exam Options: Your Pet, Your Choice

We understand every pet is different. That’s why we offer flexible exam options:If your pet is more comfortable with you nearby, we’ll perform the exam in the room with you.If your pet tends to be more relaxed away from their owner, we can take them to the treatment room.

  • Having yearly blood work, fecal testing, vaccines, are important.

The choice is always yours — just let us know what your pet prefers.

during the appointment

At Grand Oaks Pet Hospital, we want you to feel informed and comfortable throughout your appointment. Here’s how your visit will go:

  • After a nurse reviews your questionnaire, either Dr. Shah or Dr. Nancy will come in to begin your pet’s exam.
  • To help our doctors complete accurate and timely SOAP notes, your exam will be audio recorded. This allows us to focus fully on you and your pet during the visit while ensuring we capture all important details.
  • You’re welcome to ask questions at any time during the exam!

My sunshine does not come from the skies, it comes from my pets eyes!

after the exam

Once the doctor has completed the exam:

  • A technician will return to review an estimate for any recommended diagnostics, treatments, or follow-up care.
  • You’ll have time to ask questions and make informed decisions about your pet’s health.

We're here to support you and your pet every step of the way. If you ever have questions before or after your appointment, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

once you leave

If your pet had any diagnostic testing during their visit, here’s what to expect:

  • Most results are available by the next business day, and a member of our team will call you with the information.
  • Some tests — like a urine culture — take several days to process. If you're ever unsure about when to expect results, just ask — we're happy to clarify.

Who Will Call You?

  • If further treatment or medication is needed, the doctor will contact you directly.
  • If a test comes back normal or negative (like a fecal exam) and no further action is required, a nurse will call with the update.

Pets do speak, but only to those who listen.

We always recommend making an appointment for annuals or rechecks. We do accept walk ins however there may be a wait or if your pet needs urgent care,we may refer you to an emergency hospital, You can always call us to see what a wait time might be. Yes, Dr. Shah can complete a physical for your pet and issue a certificate for healthy pets.

Make sure your cat is in a carrier or dog is on a leash. Retractable leashes are not advised as they allow your dog to get too far away from you. You should fill out our new patient form online - making sure to note food and any medications the pet is taking. Bringing a fecal sample is always great. We do not accept checks so please be prepared for payment at the end of your visit. If you have any prior concerns, please ask us to send you a Cherry Payment's link to ease your mind.

Grand Oaks Pet Hospital only sees cats and dogs. We do not have any breed restrictions.

We use Feliway spray for cats. Cats and dogs all have different triggers for stress. We will talk you through how to make the visit less stressful when we meet you. If your previous veterinarian gave you any medications such as Gabapentin, they can help minimize stress.

We will learn about your pet's diet, general health, previous medical history to start. A full body exam to check the coat and skin, teeth, ears, nose, heart, lungs are next! We will discuss testing such as blood, fecal, or urine. Vaccines if not up to date are up to you except for Rabies. The Rabies Vaccine is the only one required by law. Questions are welcomed at any time during the appointment.

Lethargy, changes in appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, or behavior shifts are all indicators that your pet may need to come to the animal clinic.
