Anything is Paw-sible!

Surgical Services at Grand Oaks Pet Hospital

Safe. Compassionate. Trusted.

At Grand Oaks Pet Hospital, we are proud to offer a wide range of surgical services — from routine procedures like spaying and neutering to more complex soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. Whether your pet needs a simple fix or life-saving intervention, our highly trained team is here to provide skilled, compassionate care.

Surgery can be a source of stress for pet parents. You may wonder:
Will my pet be safe under anesthesia?
How painful will the recovery be?
How do I care for them once they’re home?

Let us put your mind at ease. Every step of the way, we are here to ensure both you and your pet feel supported and informed.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

Whether your pet is having a routine spay/neuter or a more advanced procedure, you can feel confident knowing your companion is in capable hands.

 Pre-Surgical Assessment

Before the procedure, your pet will receive:

A comprehensive physical exam

Pre-anesthetic bloodwork to evaluate organ function and ensure they are healthy enough for anesthesia

We will also take the time to answer any questions you may have about the procedure, anesthesia, or recovery.

Safe, Monitored Anesthesia

Many pet owners are terrified by the thought of their pet undergoing anesthesia. In some cases, this fear and uncertainty can prevent pets from receiving the medical care they need and deserve. Rest assured that your pet will receive safe, comprehensive, advanced anesthesia care from our staff of caring professionals. From major and minor surgeries to diagnostic procedures, we can meet your pet’s anesthetic needs.
There is nothing more important to us than your pet’s safety, so we perform a variety of pre-anesthetic tests to carefully screen patients and tailor our anesthetic protocol specifically for your pet. Our trained staff and doctors monitor your pet before, during, and after anesthesia to help ensure the best possible outcome. We also take time to answer any questions or address any concerns you may have about the medications, monitoring, and care your pet will receive. When you trust our dedicated health care professionals to manage your pet’s anesthetic care, you can rest assured that safety, efficacy, and comfort are always foremost in our minds.

While under anesthesia, your pet is continuously monitored by a veterinary technician using advanced monitoring equipment, including:

ECG (heart rate & rhythm)
Pulse oximeter (oxygen saturation)
Capnograph (respiration and CO₂ levels)
Blood pressure monitor
IV catheter (for fluids and emergency access)
Heated blanket (to maintain body temperature)
This ensures your pet’s safety before, during, and after surgery. We take every precaution to reduce risk and maximize comfort.

 After Surgery: Recovery & Support

Once your pet is safely waking up in recovery, we continue to monitor them closely. Most pets go home the same day.

Before discharge, we will:

Review postoperative care instructions
Go over any medications needed for pain, inflammation, or infection
Answer all your questions to help your pet recover smoothly at home
If anything comes up after you leave — no matter how small — we’re just a phone call away.

Spay and Neuter Surgery

Spaying or neutering is one of the best decisions you can make for your pet’s long-term health and happiness. Here’s why:

Health Benefits

  • For females: Spaying (removing the ovaries and uterus) prevents pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection, and greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer—fatal in about 50% of dogs and 90% of cats. Spaying before the first heat offers the best protection.
  • For males: Neutering (removing the testicles) prevents testicular cancer if done before six months of age, and reduces the risk of roaming, injuries, and fights.

Behavioral Benefits

  • No messy heat cycles: Unspayed cats often yowl and urinate frequently, while dogs have bloody discharges that can last up to two weeks.
  • Less roaming: Intact males often escape in search of a mate, risking accidents or fights.
  • Better manners: Neutered pets are less likely to spray, mark territory, mount furniture, or display aggression. They remain just as protective of their families as unneutered pets.

Myths Busted

  • “Spaying/neutering makes pets fat.” False! Weight gain is caused by too much food and too little exercise, not surgery.
  • “Pets need to have one litter.” Not true. Allowing unwanted litters teaches irresponsibility. Books and videos can teach children about birth without adding to pet overpopulation.

Cost Savings

The cost of spaying or neutering is far less than:

  • Raising a litter
  • Treating infections or cancers
  • Paying for injuries from roaming or fighting
  • Replacing carpets and furniture ruined by marking behaviors

Helping the Community

Spaying and neutering reduces stray populations, preventing suffering and protecting wildlife, children, and neighborhoods. Every surgery helps fight pet overpopulation—millions of unwanted cats and dogs are euthanized each year simply because there aren’t enough homes.
Spaying or neutering means a longer, healthier life for your pet—and peace of mind for you.

For a balanced life, you need a dog that will adore you and a cat that will ignore you!

Frequently Asked Questions

If you cannot find an answer to your surgery question, reach out to us. We are happy to help you make the right decision for your pets surgery.

We work with Cherry Payments, Care Credit, and Scratch pay to help ease the upfront costs of surgery. Cherry Payments approves 80% of people with credit scores as low as 475.

Spay or Neuter, Mass or Tumor Removals, Bladder Stone Removal, Foreign Body Removal, and wound - laceration repair are our most common surgeries. If we do not perform a surgery at Grand Oaks Pet Hospital, we will refer you to a specialist.

Yes. Anesthesia keeps your pet pain-free, comfortable, and still during the procedure. At Grand Oaks Pet Hospital, we use modern anesthetic protocols, continuous monitoring, and tailored drug choices to ensure safety.

While any anesthesia carries some risk, we minimize this with pre-anesthetic blood work, tailored medications, and close monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, and breathing throughout the procedure.

Blood work helps us check organ function, detect hidden illness, and choose the safest anesthesia plan. It gives us crucial information about liver, kidneys, blood sugar, and more.

Mild grogginess, sleepiness, or disorientation is normal for 12–24 hours. Keep them in a quiet space and limit activity.

Check daily for swelling, redness, or discharge. Keep it dry—no bathing or swimming until cleared by the doctor.

For safety and sterile technique, the surgical suite is staff-only. You can be with your pet before anesthesia and after they’re awake.

Please have a cone of shame ready for your pet or purchase one from us. We know pet parents feel bad seeing their pets struggle but if your pet rips open the stitches, an infection can happen, cause your pet pain, and cost you money to repair the stitches.

We have multiple options but mostly pain relief will be administered through the iv.

We will let you know the day before but usually by 9:00AM

Routine surgeries such as dental cleaning and spay or neuter, the pet is ready a few hours afterwards. We like to monitor your pet coming out of the anesthesia. More complicated surgeries may require an overnight stay. Our doctor will discuss this with you.

We cannot provide an exact time due to several factors such as how long pre-op blood work may take or if an emergency comes in, We will call you as soon as your pet gets out of surgery.

You should wait one hour after you arrive home to give any food. Only start with a small soft meal. It is important to note that some pets might experience mild queasiness due to anesthesia, and their appetite might take sometime to return to normal.

Every patient is different so we will discuss this with you in person.

The vet wrap around a pets leg held your pets iv in place. Please take off one hour after you get home.

People will abandon you in the wind, a dog follows you through a storm.
