Behavioral Medicine

Check out this great video on behavioral medicine.

We can help your pet feel and act better at Grand Oaks Pet Hospital.

Helping You and Your Pet Live Happily Together

Your pet’s behavior shapes every moment you share — from mealtime to playtime, and even those quiet moments on the couch. When behavior problems arise, they can impact the entire family dynamic and put the bond you share at risk. In severe cases, unresolved behavior issues can sadly lead to surrender or euthanasia.

Common Behavior Issues We Address

We provide expert counseling for a wide range of behavioral concerns, including:

Excessive barking

Chewing, scratching, or digging

Inappropriate urination or spraying

House soiling

Growling, biting, or aggression

Why Behavior Problems Happen

Behavioral issues can stem from many causes, including:

Misunderstandings or unintended associations during training

Emotional trauma or past mistreatment

Medical conditions that mimic behavioral problems (like allergies, pain, or hormonal imbalances)

Stressful changes in the environment, such as moving or adding new family members

Our Approach: Medical + Behavioral Care

We start with a thorough veterinary exam to rule out or treat any medical causes of your pet’s behavior. Conditions such as skin allergies, urinary infections, dental pain, or joint discomfort can lead to problem behaviors.

For serious issues, medication may be recommended often alongside behavior modification training to help your pet cope and improve.

For example, a dog fearful of thunderstorms may benefit from calming medication while learning new coping skills through behavior therapy.

Why Early Intervention Matters

The sooner behavior problems are addressed, the easier they are to correct. Don’t let frustration build or your pet’s quality of life suffer.

Together, we can restore peace to your home and strengthen your bond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Millions of pet parents struggle with behavior issues. Get help now at Grand Oaks Pet Hospital.

Yes, we can. Please book an appointment to start with a wellness exam.

Unfortunately, the FDA does not allow return of medications.

Even if the behavior isn’t happening in front of us, the details you provide, what you see, when it happens, how often, and what seems to set it off give us important clues. This information helps us understand the pattern and root cause. Short clips recorded at home let us observe the behavior in the environment where it actually happens. This often provides more accurate information than an in-clinic visit. Pets often act differently at the vet clinic because they are distracted, nervous, or overstimulated. This can “hide” the behavior, but the absence of the behavior in the clinic still tells us something important about what's going on. Between your observations, videos, your pet’s medical and behavioral history, and the patterns we recognize from experience, we can build a personalized treatment or training plan that addresses the behavior—even if we never see it directly.

We evaluate a wide range of issues, including anxiety, aggression, house-soiling, destructive behavior, excessive vocalization, obsessive behaviors, and age-related changes. Many behavior concerns have an underlying medical cause, so your veterinarian is a great first step.

Absolutely! Think about when you do not feel good, you might want to be left alone or be grumpy. Schedule an exam to find out and get help.

Yes. Many behaviors—such as irritability, sudden aggression, inappropriate urination, or changes in activity—can be linked to pain, illness, or hormonal changes. A physical exam and sometimes lab work help us rule out medical causes before creating a behavior plan.

Sometimes. Medication can help reduce anxiety or reactivity, allowing training and behavior modification to be more effective. If medication is recommended, we’ll discuss why, how it works, and what to expect.

No. Punishment can increase fear and anxiety, often making behaviors worse. We use positive, reward-based methods backed by science and veterinary behavior guidelines.

Every pet is different. Some respond quickly, while others need more time and consistency. We create realistic expectations and guide you through each step of the process.

It's OK to be obsessed with your pets!
